Founded by Christia Uys, Ilse Meiring, and Carla de Jager, the YouMatterWalk has grown into a movement that proves that even in the wake of deep loss, hope can take root, communities can come together, and every step forward can help someone feel seen, supported and reminded that they matter.

Olifantsfontein, South Africa (01 September 2026) – No matter what season of life a person finds themselves in or whatever hardships they face, they deserve to know that they matter. That their life has immense value, their struggles do not define them, and there is always someone, somewhere, ready to listen and offer a shoulder to lean on.

The YouMatterWalk exists to share this message of hope, break the silence around suicidal thoughts, and build a community of awareness and support.

Founded by three women united by personal loss due to suicide – Christia Uys, Ilse Meiring, and Carla de Jager – YouMatterWalk was born from grief but fuelled by purpose.

With the shared vision to save others from the heartache and devastation left behind by suicide, the YouMatterWalk has become their way of standing in solidarity with anyone going through a tough season and reminding them that they shouldn’t walk through life alone.

“Research shows that each suicide impacts up to 135 people – a statistic that speaks to the widespread pain left behind. Our mission is to create hope, build community, and remind every person that they matter. If we can save even one family from the heartache and devastation left behind by suicide, it will be worth it,” said Ilse Meiring on behalf of the YouMatterWalk Warriors.

This walk has grown into a movement that aims to raise awareness around suicide prevention and mental health, provide access to support resources, spark honest conversations, and break stigma.

Videos from the 2024 and 2025 walks show how the initiative and annual event welcomed people from all walks of life to commemorate loved ones gone too soon, support those going through difficult times and speak up about mental health.
