Rob saved the change, and Diana grew the herbs. ‘Every little bit adds up to something amazing!’
Uitenhage, South Africa (02 September 2026) – The Masons didn’t have to move mountains to make a difference. A green thumb, some spare change and an extra bit of thoughtfulness were all it took.
Giving back to a cause you care about can sometimes feel daunting, especially when the fundraisers we often hear about involve thousands of rands, big events or huge community drives.
It can leave you wondering how much difference one person can really make with only a little to give.
Rob and Diana Mason are a lovely reminder that the answer is…quite a lot, actually!
The Uitenhage SPCA recently took to social media to celebrate the elderly couple, who found two wonderfully simple ways to raise money for the vulnerable animals in the shelter’s care.
“A very special THANK YOU to Rob and Diana Mason, who popped into SPCA Uitenhage with a wonderful cash donation.” the SPCA shared. “And we absolutely love the stories behind how it was raised!”
Diana, who is part of a local gardening group, put her green thumb to good use by growing and selling herbs. Rather than pocketing the proceeds, she decided that every cent raised would go towards helping the SPCA.
Her husband Rob had his own way of contributing.
“At the end of each day, he empties his wallet, saves what’s left and has now gifted it to the SPCA!”
It is such a simple habit, but that is what makes their story so special. Neither effort required a major campaign or an impossible grand gesture. Diana used something she already enjoyed doing, and Rob slowly put aside what he could.
Over time, those little contributions became a meaningful donation for an organisation that relies on public support to continue caring for animals in need.
There is something worth taking from that. Supporting a cause does not necessarily mean giving hundreds of rands at once. It might be putting aside your loose change, selling something secondhand or something you have made, using a hobby to raise a little money or simply choosing to contribute what you can, when you can.
The Uitenhage SPCA says Rob and Diana’s kindness is proof that small acts really do add up.
“It just goes to show that helping animals doesn’t always require a huge fundraiser. Grow some herbs. Save your change. Do something small — and over time, those small acts can make a BIG difference.”
