Never close the door on a missing pet! Ice had been gone for six months before he was found 10 km from home. The moment he reunited with his mom, he walked right up to her like no time had passed at all.

Cape Peninsula, South Africa (03 September 2026) – After six months of hoping and praying, a cat mom has been reunited with her four-legged love, reminding others with missing pets that sometimes, against all odds, they do come home.

Ice is Sue-Kelly’s cat child. Six months ago, he went missing. A house cat with no experience of the outside world was suddenly far from his home, his safe place and his humans.

His family was distraught. With no other way to find him, they plastered ‘missing cat’ posters across social media and missing pet platforms. A reward was offered for his return. They were desperate for hope and any lead that might help bring him home.

They kept looking, but weeks turned into months. The silence came with heartbreak. What if he never returned? What if so much time had passed that he’d forgotten he had a family at all? What if he was in danger, starving or worse?

Those thoughts circled, and while hope may have withered at times, it never disappeared.

Sue-Kelly says that each day, she would pray.

“For almost six months, I prayed relentlessly that Ice would be kept safe, that he would find food and that somehow, one day, he would come home to me…” she says, recounting the story on Facebook.

Then came a glimmer of hope. One day, the family received word that their beloved Ice had been spotted 10 kilometres away from home, living beneath containers at a large factory in an industrial area.

He was so far from home, but he appeared to be safe. That was all that mattered.

“As frightening as that sounds, he had found himself a safe hiding place where he remained for all those months, with another cat as his little companion.” says Sue-Kelly.

“Behind the factory is another business park, where two incredible ladies from a glass shop feed and care for stray cats. A few weeks ago, we discovered that Ice was there and tried to catch him, but because the factory is so large and closes after hours, it was almost impossible.”

Those two incredibly kind humans took it upon themselves to help reunite Ice with his family. A happy ending was on the horizon, but getting him there would take patience.

“I explained that Ice is possibly the most frightened and cautious cat in the world. That was probably why he never wandered away from the factory—he had found somewhere that felt safe, and he stayed there.”

“I stayed in contact with one of the ladies, Priscilla, who continued feeding him.”

Slowly, Priscilla earned his trust and affection. Eventually, he became comfortable enough to move over to her side of the property. Once Ice knew he was safe in her presence, Priscilla managed to get him into a secure room.

“Then came the message I had prayed for: ‘I’ve got him.” says Sue-Kelly.

“When I walked into that room and saw him, I couldn’t hold back my tears. He looked so much bigger—almost body-built! Most importantly, he looked healthy and well-fed. The moment he heard my voice, he knew exactly who I was. There was no fear and no hesitation. He immediately came to me, climbed onto me, kissed me and couldn’t stop loving me. After all those months apart, my Ice was still my Ice.”

Once reunited, the family took Ice to a 24-hour vet, where he was thoroughly examined, given all the necessary injections and a clean bill of health.

“He is now safely home, behaving as if he never left—loving, cuddly and completely himself.
While Ice was missing, I adopted two little kittens who were supposed to become his friends. Now they really will get that chance!”

Thanks to a stranger’s patience, understanding and compassion, a family has its beloved four-legged member back. It’s another case in point for cat lovers and why they’re often some of the most compassionate people you’ll meet!

“A very special thank you to Priscilla at the glass shop for feeding him, patiently earning his trust and caring enough to help bring him home. Thank you to every kind stranger who feeds, protects and looks after animals who have nowhere else to go. Your compassion changes lives—and sometimes, it reunites a family.”

Sue-Kelly ended with a hopeful message for fellow pet owners still searching for their fur-babies.

“To everyone searching for a missing pet: please don’t give up hope. Keep looking, keep sharing and keep praying. Our animals are family. They walk beside us through our happiest moments and our darkest days. Ice was completely irreplaceable—and now, after almost six months, he is finally home.”

This story also serves as an important reminder about microchipping. A missing pet with a registered microchip has a much better chance of being identified and reunited with its family sooner.

South African pet owners should ensure that pets are microchipped and that their chips are registered and kept up to date with a correct address and contact details!

Thankfully, this time around, Ice found his way back to exactly where he belonged.
