Wits has bid farewell to Carol Crosley, whose career at the university spanned almost 30 years and touched generations of students and colleagues.

Johannesburg, South Africa (07 September 2026) – This week marked her final week at the university, bringing an end to a remarkable chapter that saw her become a familiar face to thousands of students and colleagues.

After nearly three decades at the University of the Witwatersrand, Carol Crosley has officially closed the door on her time at Wits.

Carol served as Wits Registrar for 12 years, and during that time, she watched around 120,000 students walk across the graduation stage.

Her contribution to the university was recognised during the final ceremony of Wits’ Winter Graduation cluster, where Professor Garth Stevens, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People Development and Culture, paid tribute to Carol and reflected on the impact she has had on the institution and the generations of Witsies she has worked alongside.

But while the numbers tell part of the story, Carol’s legacy can also be found in the people she encountered along the way.

After years of dedicated service, she leaves Wits with a collection of heartfelt messages from colleagues and students whose lives she has touched, as well as a reputation for professionalism, commitment and genuine care for the university.

And as she looks back on her time at Wits, one thing stands out: her passion for the institution.

Nearly 30 years, 12 years as Registrar and around 120,000 graduates later, Carol leaves behind a legacy that stretches far beyond her title.
