The victory keeps Doig’s US Open Junior campaign alive after three African players made the singles main draw for the first time.

New York, USA (09 September 2026) – South Africa’s Connor Doig has booked his place in the third round of the 2026 US Open Junior Tennis Championships after a hard-fought three-set victory over Nigeria’s Oluwaseun Peter Ogunsakin on Tuesday.

The South African came through a battle that had plenty of twists and turns, eventually beating the Nigerian 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to keep his Grand Slam campaign alive.

Doig got off to a better start, taking control of the opening set and winning it 6-2. Ogunsakin, however, was not about to make things easy for him.

The 17-year-old Nigerian lifted his level in the second set and fought back with a 6-4 win, sending the match into a deciding set.

The South African regained control in the third, closing it out 6-3 to secure his place in the next round and become the only African player remaining in the boys’ singles draw.

Doig entered the tournament directly into the main draw, while his South African teammate John Bothma was unable to progress after failing to secure a win.

The result also comes during a significant US Open Junior Championships for African tennis. Four African players started the tournament, with Botswana’s Ntungamili Raguin, Nigeria’s Ogunsakin and South Africans Doig and Bothma making up the contingent.

Three of them (Raguin, Ogunsakin and Doig) advanced to the singles main draw, marking the first time three African junior boys have simultaneously reached the US Open Juniors Singles Main Draw.

For Doig, the focus now shifts to the next challenge.
