The wholesome interaction was a reminder of the impact Proteas Women can have on the next generation of cricket fans.

Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (16 September 2026) – There was a very special moment waiting for one young cricket fan after the Proteas Women’s latest win in Zimbabwe.

As the South African players made their way around after the match, the young fan came running over and caught the attention of Laura Wolvaardt and Annerie Dercksen

What followed was one of those wholesome moments that are easy to smile at.

The young girl chatted to the Proteas stars, pointing out players she liked and even explaining why she enjoyed watching one of them play.

She appeared a little shy at first, but soon settled into the conversation before asking for a hug.

“Can I have a hug?”

And, of course, she got one.

It was a small interaction, but one that showed just how much moments like these can mean to young fans, particularly young girls getting to see women competing at the highest level.

The encounter came shortly after South Africa secured an 80-run victory over Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, with Wolvaardt producing a record-breaking 126 not out from 62 balls and Annerie Dercksen taking a career-best five wickets for 15 runs.

But away from the big performances and the scorecard, it was this little fan who stole the moment.

Because sometimes the memories made after the final ball are just as special as what happened during the game.
