The challenging six-day journey will look to raise awareness and funds for Rainbows and Smiles and the families it supports.
Cape Town, South Africa (29 September 2026) – David Sandmann is swapping the comfort of home for six days on the road as he takes on a roughly 286km walk from Table View to the Cederberg in support of children and families affected by childhood cancer.
David will set off on Monday, 5 October 2026, walking between 40 and 60km a day through the Western Cape on a journey he hopes will raise both funds and awareness for Rainbows and Smiles.
The destination is significant to him too. The Cederberg is where David and his family spend time each year, making the journey something of a personal trip with a much bigger purpose attached to it.
For the past five years, he has taken part in Run for a Reason, walking in support of children affected by childhood cancer. Through that experience, he has heard stories from children and families supported by Rainbows and Smiles.
Now he wants to take that message further.
The walk is expected to be physically demanding, with long days on the road, tired legs and the inevitable blisters and sore feet that come with covering such a distance.
Rainbows and Smiles provides practical support to families navigating childhood cancer, helping with everything from making children more comfortable to creating moments of joy and assisting parents with some of the challenges that come with caring for a seriously ill child.
David has set up a fundraising page, allowing people to contribute directly to the organisation and the families it supports.
And support does not necessarily have to mean putting money towards the cause.
