South Africa rallied behind Welly when he needed help getting to Mthatha for his driver’s test. The internet-famous Stellies car guard just got his wheels!
Stellenbosch, South Africa (19 October 2026) – After South Africa rallied behind Stellenbosch car guard Masixole Wellington Ngqungu earlier this year – raising 12 times the funds he needed to travel back to the Eastern Cape for his driver’s licence test – he has shared the most wholesome update…

Wellington has reached celebrity status at Stellenbosch University, where he watches over cars, and on social media, where he spreads joy to his following of over 11,000 Welly believers.
That is where his request for help was first posted. Months ago, Welly appealed to his social media followers with a humble plea. Getting a driver’s licence was his next step toward supporting his family, but travelling to Mthatha to take his test was the main hurdle in his way. He needed R5,000 to make the journey there and back.
A BackaBuddy fundraising campaign was created, Welly’s posts went viral, and South Africans rallied behind him.
With weeks to spare before his driver’s test, supporters chipped in to help raise a whopping R60,000 – enough to get Wellington to his test and back, with the rest going toward savings to buy a car.
Good news came in September when Wellington shared an update that he had aced his test!
“I’m very happy to share that the trip to Mthatha for my driving test on 12 May was successful, and I am proud to say that I successfully obtained my driver’s licence!” he wrote. “I am incredibly grateful to every single person who supported my campaign. Your kindness and generosity helped me achieve something that I had been working towards for a long time.”
Then, a month later came even better news…Welly got his wheels! He took to social media on Friday last week, flashing a new set of keys and the biggest smile.
“After getting my driver’s licence, the next goal was to find a car that would allow me to start an Uber business and earn additional income for my family. Thanks to the generosity and support of everyone who contributed to my [BackaBuddy] campaign that dream is finally becoming a reality!”

He says that there are still a few things that need fixing before he can officially hit the road, but he is one huge step closer to building a more secure future for his wife and sons.
“To everyone who donated, shared the campaign, sent a message or helped spread my story: THANK YOU. Every single contribution made a difference, and this milestone would not have been possible without you,” he wrote. “This has always been about more than a car. It is about opportunity, independence and creating a better future for the people who matter most.”
We like to believe that good things come in threes. After acing his driver’s test and getting a car, Welly celebrated hitting 10,000 followers on Instagram this week! His follow count has climbed since, and is now sitting at over 11,000!
