Sometimes, making a difference starts with a jar of ingredients, a warm blanket and a community willing to show up for its neighbours so that those benefits can extend to the animals who depend on them, too.
Robertson, South Africa (27 October 2026) – For families living and working on farms such as in an area like Robertson, caring for beloved dogs and cats is part of everyday life. Yet when household budgets are stretched, providing for the family can become a challenge, and the cost of essential veterinary care may be difficult to manage.
John Moore Animal Welfare (JMAW) understands that improving animal welfare means looking at the bigger picture. That it is about recognising that the wellbeing of people and the welfare of their animals are often closely connected.
With this in mind, JMAW, in partnership with a team from Nedbank Robertson recently turned that simple idea into a meaningful act of kindness. Together, they prepared 67 Jars of Hope for farming families in the surrounding community. These were distributed during a community rabies vaccination morning in September while JMAW worked to protect animals through vaccination.
The partnership continued as JMAW distributed the Jars of Hope, together with donated blankets, bedding and other useful items, among farm-working families in the surrounding area.

It was a powerful showcase of two forms of care coming together: helping put food on family tables while supporting the health and welfare of their pets. Each jar contains the ingredients to prepare a meal for a family of four and together make up 268 meal portions – offering practical support for households that may be facing difficult choices when it comes to meeting everyday needs.
By supporting families with food and donated essentials, the organisation hopes to ease some of the pressure on households while strengthening relationships with the people whose animals it serves.
For the recipients, these contributions offered practical assistance and the reassurance that their community had not forgotten them. Many of the families were already known to JMAW through a mass sterilisation drive in 2025, when farm workers brought their pets forward to be sterilised. The initiative helped prevent unwanted litters and supported more responsible pet ownership.
Returning to these communities with food and essential items builds on those relationships. JMAW recognises that lasting animal welfare work involves more than treating an animal at a clinic. It also means understanding the circumstances of the people who love and care for that animal.

Through its community veterinary clinic in Robertson, JMAW works to make essential veterinary services accessible to qualifying families, including vaccinations, parasite control and sterilisation. The organisation’s approach reflects a simple but important principle: when we support the people who care for animals, we give those animals a better chance at healthier lives.
Michelle, John Moore Animal Welfare, said it has been wonderful working with the bank over the past four years.
“They are an awesome team who have made a real difference in our community by joining hands with us. Their continued support means so much to JMAW and to the families and animals we serve. We salute them for their generosity, their commitment and their willingness to make a difference where it matters most.”
