Luke makes South African history with world championship gold, while he and sister Madeline also secure duo bronze in Prague.
Prague, Czech Republic (02 November 2026) – Two Benoni siblings have put South African dance on the world map after returning from the IDO World Tap Dance Championships in Prague with a gold medal, a bronze and another impressive appearance in a world championship final.
Luke Scrase made history by becoming the first South African to win the Adult Male Solo title, taking top honours against 26 competitors at the UNYP Arena in Czechia.

His winning performance, titled Violent Crimes, earned him the world championship gold medal in what was his fifth appearance representing South Africa at the international competition.
The achievement was made even more special by the fact that the winning choreography was a collaboration between Luke and his sister and coach, Madeline Scrase.
The siblings enjoyed an outstanding competition, with Madeline and Luke also claiming bronze in the Adult Duo category.
Their performance placed third out of 32 competing duos and marked South Africa’s first podium finish in the Adult Duo category since 2011. Adding a proudly local touch, they performed to music by South African artist Will Linley.
Madeline also reached the Adult Female Solo final for the fourth time, finishing sixth among 43 dancers in the competition’s largest category. Her self-choreographed performance, In Case You Don’t Live Forever, once again showcased her ability among the world’s leading tap dancers.
The latest results build on another successful campaign last year, when both siblings claimed bronze medals in their respective solo categories and finished sixth in the duo competition.
Originally from Benoni, Madeline and Luke began their dance journeys at Steps School of Dance before continuing their training at Dance2Express in Kempton Park.
Madeline has since established herself as a choreographer and qualified dance teacher, working with dancers at several studios. Through The Creative Co-Op, she also prepares performers for competitions and productions, sharing the experience gained through her international career.

She has represented South Africa nine times and reached several world championship finals, while Luke has now represented the country on five occasions. Both have also earned their official National Colours for Dance Sport.
Away from the dance floor, Luke is a second-year LLB student at Wits University and has also represented South Africa in karate.
The siblings compete internationally under the South African Body of Dance (SABOD) and the Federation of Dance Sport South Africa, with SABOD’s affiliation to the International Dance Organization providing a pathway for local dancers to qualify for world championship events.
From their early training days in Benoni to standing on the world championship podium in Prague, the Scrase siblings have delivered a memorable result for South African dance.
