One granny square turned into a wave of kindness – and newfound crochet skills – at a boys’ primary school in Hillcrest!
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (02 November 2026) – The learners at Highbury Preparatory School for Boys in Hillcrest have learned two good things.
One: how to crochet a granny square. That skill will serve you well throughout life.
Two: the joy of giving!
What started with a request to crochet a square ended with 50 blankets ready to donate, the school shared on Facebook, alongside a few adorable snaps of learners showing off their crocheted blankets.
Their teacher, Mrs Kruger, turned one crochet lesson into an initiative that will bring warmth to many in need. The project taught the young learners at the school that half the joy of making something special comes from giving it away to someone who needs it more than you do.
Once family members and loved ones caught wind of the project, the squares began flying in.
“Mrs Kruger’s initiative soon became a family effort, with mums and grannies joining the boys to help crochet squares.” the school shared.
Once all the squares were collected, they were lovingly stitched together into 50 blankets, which will be donated to a selection of the school’s chosen charities.
“Thank you to everyone who picked up a crochet hook, contributed a square, or helped stitch the blankets together. A wonderful result from a generous school community,” the school added.
And that’s how one small square turned into 50 tokens of love for people who really need them.
More great inspiration for schools to teach learners skills that serve a greater purpose and kindness that keeps on giving.
