Through every storm he weathered as a child, and right through to adulthood, Jonathan’s journey at Vuyani Safe Haven just goes to show that with a safe foundation, courage, and a second chance, no past can dictate a brighter future.

Graaff-Reinet, South Africa (03 November 2026) – Everyone deserves the gentle grace of a second chance, particularly those who were handed a difficult hand long before they ever had a say in writing their own story.

In 2015, at the age of 11, Jonathan Hermaans arrived at Vuyani Safe Haven after experiencing challenging circumstances at home involving alcohol abuse. He was placed in the temporary care of Vuyani, while his two younger siblings went to live with relatives. Jonathan desperately wanted to be reunited with them, and by 2016, he was able to join his siblings while living in the safety and care of a foster family.

During his time at Vuyani, as the organisation shares, Jonathan grew to appreciate the structure and stability of a set routine, completing his homework, and having regular meals. He eventually matriculated from Nqweba High School in 2022.

Since then, Jonathan has pursued further studies, explored different careers, and followed his passion for music. His journey has also brought heavy challenges, including addiction and depression, but he has shown incredible courage in facing them.

“In Cape Town, he became involved in the music industry and experienced both personal and professional success. However, this new chapter also came with its challenges. The fast-paced lifestyle proved tempting, and Jonathan struggled to resist some of those influences, leading him to make choices that he would later regret,” shares Vuyani.

While battling addiction and depression, Jonathan made the difficult decision to return home to care for his mother and siblings. Though he faced many obstacles, he never stopped pursuing his dreams.

“His experiences have taught him some of life’s toughest lessons, including the importance of trusting that God has a plan and believing in the power of second chances. He has also learned the value of surrounding himself with positive friends and understanding that there is no shame in asking for advice or support.”

These lessons have been shaped by both the hurdles he has overcome and the support he received along the way, giving special meaning to his memories of Vuyani.

For Jonathan, Vuyani was more than simply a place he stayed as a young boy. It was a haven that provided him with stability, care, and a sense of belonging – something that has stayed with him throughout his journey.

“For a young man, Jonathan has experienced and overcome a great deal. His journey has been one of resilience, growth and second chances.”
