While Olwethu Leshabane and her husband “Neo De Jenero” were on holiday in Dubai they encountered an internet troll, Neo wasn’t having it and stood up for his wife.
The Internet can be a fascinating place but it can also be a dark and scary place. Sometimes people can be harsher and more forward than they would be in person. We call these people Internet Trolls, people who can only find the bad in situations.
Recently Olwethu Leshabane, a blogger and advocate for women, shared a photo of herself in a one-piece swimsuit posing with her husband in Dubai. Immediately she was attacked for the swimsuit she was wearing.
An internet troll messaged Neo De Jenero, Olwethu’s husband, and questioned why he would allow her to wear such a revealing swimsuit. The troll questioned her ability to be a good wife and whether she respected herself and her marriage.
Neo wasn’t going to allow the troll to speak about his wife in such a way nor portray those kinds of beliefs on any other women in South Africa. So he responded in a comment that was powerful and has the internet applauding his response. Neo has since made his Instagram account private but someone screenshot his response and it is just WOW!
“these ‘ideals of respect and so-called teaching of what constitutes a good wife’ you are talking about are dated and continue to help patriarchy thrive. Stop that shit! Let women make their own choices about their lives, including but not limited to what to wear, where and when to wear it… oh, and in addition, I posted half naked. I only had shorts on. No one expressed any issue with that except that I need to get in better shape, but you guys want to be out here going on about how my wife should dress at the beach with 34 degrees Dubai heat”
Neo didn’t just stand up for his wife in this response, he stood up for every South African woman. He challenged a way of thinking and insists that this needs to stop.
We wholeheartedly agree! Thanks for your comments Neo!
