Door of Hope Share Beautiful Image of Little Girl Waiting for Her New Parents

Door of Hope shared a post on Twitter showing a toddler waiting for her new parents to arrive, and her excitement is melting hearts!

Johannesburg, South Africa (20 November 2019) – Door of Hope takes in abandoned babies in the Johannesburg area. They have a ‘baby box’ where people can safely and anonymously leave unwanted babies; this option is much safer than the alternative. Babies are also brought to them from police stations and hospitals.

The faith-based organisation, which opened its ‘Baby Box’ in 1999, runs three care houses with facilities for caring for 72 abandoned babies at any one time and one children’s village for babies who are unadoptable or need medium to long-term permanent care. On average, 9 babies a month come to Door of Hope; the baby box is not the only way babies arrive at Door of Hope, sometimes it’s via the police or hospitals, and some babies that are placed in the box are only a few hours old.

But these figures are only the tip of the iceberg, and the number of children saved is still dwarfed by those who die of neglect and abandonment. In Johannesburg alone, at least five babies are abandoned every day! They are found wrapped in plastic bags, discarded in rubbish bins, thrown into rivers, flushed down toilets and left in hospitals or parks.

This is why Door of Hope takes in every baby they possibly can.

Every year, the organisation uses the festive season to collect formula and nappies, as this is one of their highest expenses. If you want to help them, you can find out more here. While their nappy and formula drive is essential, that isn’t why we are writing about them this time around.

Instead, we want to share one of the cutest photos they have shared to date (well, we think so anyway). The image is of one of their orphans looking out the window, waiting for her new parents.

The little girl was finally adopted, something the organisation hopes for every one of their babies. Take a look at her waiting for her new family below.

Child abandonment continues to be a major challenge in South Africa. Every year it is estimated that 3,500 children are abandoned and this figure refers only to the children who survive. Of these survivors, 90% are under the age of one. They are left alone and defenceless.
