A total of $250,000 is being donated to a selection of South African organisations from the Airbnb Community Fund which will go a long way to sustaining change.

South Africa (02 July 2021) – Over 150 organisations from more than 40 countries on 6 continents will be the recipients of the inaugural grant by the Airbnb Community Fund. Several of these organisations are from South Africa.

The global company believes in sharing the its success with its stakeholders, including the communities that Hosts call home. That’s why they created the Airbnb Community Fund to distribute $100 million over the next 10 years to organisations that are strengthening communities around the world, including $10 million distributed throughout 2021.

In South Africa the Community fund will donate more than $250,000 USD to organisations including African Angels, Infinite Family, Love Story Foundation and Gift of the Givers. These organisations are working to meet unprecedented needs brought about by the pandemic, and focusing on this year’s themes: COVID-19 relief, economic empowerment, and education.

Grant recipients have outlined the impact the funding will have for their organisation.

A spokesperson from Gift of the Givers, a South African non-governmental organization and disaster relief group:

“We will allocate these additional funds by Airbnb to our Education Support Project. The funding towards this project will greatly impact learners as each intervention assists in reducing the drop-out rate which increases their chance of a successful future through education.”

To determine how to direct these grants, we turned to our Host community. Airbnb’s Host Advisory Board, a group of exceptional Hosts who act as the voice of the Host community to Airbnb leaders, selected the grant focus areas and worked with our program partner, GlobalGiving, to compile a list of global organizations working to meet these needs. Members of Host Clubs around the world then voted on organisations they believed have the greatest impact in their regions.

In addition to the host selected process, Airbnb will direct grant awards to additional organisations that they believe play an important role in communities around the world. To learn more about the Community Fund and the grant recipients, please visit the Airbnb Community Fund page.
