He was just 17, but in his final moments, Divann Lamprecht made a choice that would change and save lives.
Kempton Park, South Africa (15 July 2025) – Sometimes, a single moment can leave the entire country holding its breath.
A hospital corridor. A teenager. A father walking beside him. And a quiet stillness, filled with love, respect and unbearable heartbreak.
That was the scene at Arwyp Medical Centre in Kempton Park, where doctors, nurses, friends and staff members stood silently to honour Divann Lamprecht, a Grade 11 learner from Hoërskool Kempton Park who tragically passed away but chose, in his final act, to save the lives of others.
Divann didn’t get to finish school. He won’t see his matric dance or drive his first car. But what he did leave behind was something far bigger: a legacy of selflessness, of bravery, of choosing to give, even when life gave him the unthinkable.
The moment was captured in a video that’s gone viral, not because of shock or drama, but because of the raw beauty in how people came together to honour a young man who became a hero.
It is one of the most moving scenes we’ve seen in a long time.
According to Briefly News, five months ago, Johann Lamprecht lost his wife to cancer. Now, he’s lost his only son too. But instead of letting grief break him, he chose to honour Divann’s final wish. Organ donation wasn’t a decision made in crisis, it was something Divann had decided on before. And his dad made sure it happened.
To show respect and gratitude for that brave choice, Divann recieved a guard of honour.
His school, Hoërskool Kempton Park, posted a heartfelt tribute to the young man who’d earned awards, made friends easily and lifted spirits just by being himself. Another school, Derona Academy, joined in the chorus of tributes, calling Divann “a true hero” and thanking his family for their strength. This wasn’t just a loss for one school or one family. The entire community felt it.
The video, shared by Arwyp Medical Centre on Facebook, has gone viral. Millions of South Africans have watched, cried and shared. And they’ve filled the comment section with love.
“I’m in tears. The devastated father broke my heart aswell as the compassion of the nurses broke my heart. This just makes me think again what life is really about. Hold your loved ones tight and love them dearly, because tomorrow’s not garenteed and life is short. May God hold the family in His hands and give them the peace they need to get through this difficult time!.”
“It breaks my heart… To the parents…I have no words but you did your best to raise a child that chose to save other people. He is a true hero….”
“Thank you Divann for your gift of life to so many. To his parents, may God bless you for beautiful magnificent gift you are allowing your son to give. It must be heart wrenching but at the same time to be so proud of the life’s your son will save and help. I am a donor, I hope this will encourage all those bidding farewell to Divann will now go and register as a donor, on behalf of Divann’s legacy and to support his family. Stay strong, keep the faith. For those receiving any of his organs good luck, may you life a long healthy life. And remember the sacrifice that was paid for you. God bless you all 🙏”
“My dad had a kidney transplant. It gave me 23 years and counting with him that I otherwise would not have had, now my children have the benefit of a grandfather. To the family we are sorry for your loss. May Jesus be your comfort
thank you for this gift of life that has changed many families lives today..”
We saw comment after comment. Some from families who’d lost loved ones, some from fellow organ donor families and some just from people who were moved deeply by a young boy’s bravery. Divann didn’t just leave behind memories. He left behind breath in another’s lungs. A second chance at life for someone waiting. A heartbeat in a chest that might not have had one.
That’s not just heroic. That’s life-changing.
And maybe that’s the real story here. That out of immense loss, a light can still shine. That even the shortest life can leave the biggest legacy. That a 17-year-old boy from Kempton Park, with a kind smile and a big heart, gave others a reason to keep going.
Divann Lamprecht, you will never be forgotten.
