A late-night rescue by Soshanguve Animal Shelter and Educentre has given an injured father dog, a mother and four newborn puppies a fresh start.
Soshanguve, South Africa (02 July 2026) – A routine call to a police station turned into a life-saving rescue for a vulnerable family of six dogs after an animal shelter stepped in to offer them a second chance.
Soshanguve Animal Shelter and Educentre responded to a call from Reitgat Police Station after a distressed foreign national sought help, fearing that his dogs would be harmed.
When rescuers arrived, they found a mother dog, an injured father dog and four tiny puppies believed to be only a few days old.
The shelter said the man was visibly disoriented and initially hesitant to part with his beloved pets, prompting rescuers to spend time earning his trust and reassuring him that the animals would be cared for.
With the father dog nursing a leg injury and the puppies still so young, the shelter immediately took the family in, where they are now receiving food, veterinary treatment and a safe place to recover.
The organisation also thanked the management and members of Reitgat Police Station for their compassion and quick action.
“A heartfelt thank you to the management and members of Reitgat Police Station for their compassion and for ensuring these precious lives ended up in safe hands. Your quick action and concern made this rescue possible.”
The shelter is now appealing to members of the public to help care for the rescued family through donations of dog food, blankets or financial contributions to assist with veterinary expenses.
Those who would like to support the dogs’ recovery and the shelter’s ongoing rescue efforts can do so by following the donation link here.
