As flames engulfed Delfi Greek Taverna on Thursday afternoon, an unknown man reportedly made a split-second decision that saved a woman’s life… and then vanished from the scene.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (04 September 2026) – Durban, we need to find a hero. Yesterday afternoon, as flames tore through one of the city’s much-loved old Greek restaurants, an unknown man saw a family in trouble and then did something extraordinary. He took off his shirt, poured water over himself and ran into a burning building to rescue a woman trapped inside.
And then, once she was safe, he just disappeared.
The devastating fire broke out at Delfi Greek Taverna, the long-standing family-run restaurant on the corner of Lilian Ngoyi Road and Livingstone Road in Windermere, shortly before 5pm on Thursday, the 3rd of September 2026. Emergency services arrived to find the building engulfed in flames, with smoke reportedly visible from as far away as Berea. The damage is extensive and the restaurant, which has been part of Durban’s story for decades, has reportedly been gutted. But in the middle of everything that was lost yesterday, lives were saved, and one of those rescues has left a community searching for the stranger responsible.
Murray from Durban Fire Operations remained at the scene on Thursday evening and shared an update after speaking to Maria Teranes, whose family has run Delphi for years.
“The building is totally gutted but Maria is safe, her sister is safe and both of her dogs are safe. Unfortunately, her parrot perished in the fire.”
According to Murray, Maria had come downstairs to find the restaurant engulfed in flames and managed to get outside with her two dogs. It was then that a man who happened to be nearby approached her and asked whether anybody was still inside.
Maria’s sister was.
“This man took off his shirt, asked for water to be poured over him and then ran into the burning building. He managed to get Maria’s sister out safely… and then he disappeared.”
Nobody appears to know his name or where he went afterwards but what they do know is that Maria’s sister made it out of that building because a complete stranger was willing to put himself in danger to help her.
“We don’t know who this gentleman is but he is a true hero I really think we need to find him because this man deserves to be honoured in some way for the selfless rescue he pulled off.”
“Maria’s sister is alive because of what he did.”
Delfi is not just another restaurant. The premises began as a corner shop in the 1970s and later became the family-run Greek taverna operated by Maria and her sister, with the family living above the restaurant. Over decades, it became a Durban institution woven into the neighbourhood, known for its traditional Greek food and the family behind it.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson confirmed that emergency crews arrived to find the building well alight while eThekwini firefighters battled the blaze. Thankfully, there were no reported fatalities or serious injuries. Three people were assessed for minor smoke inhalation but were cleared at the scene and did not require hospital treatment.
By around 6pm, firefighters had contained the blaze and were damping down the property. The cause of the fire is not yet known and is being investigated by SAPS and the eThekwini Fire Department.
For now, Murray has also urged members of the public not to send money into unofficial accounts while a proper structure is established to help the family, who have lost almost everything.
“The community has been phenomenal in its support, but before anybody puts money into any accounts, I think a trust needs to be formed for the Delfi and for Maria. She has absolutely nothing left. Nothing at all. Maria and her sister have been left with only the clothes on their backs. So, if anybody would like to donate money, please hold off for now. Let’s make sure we do this properly. I’ll keep everyone posted.”
There will be time to talk about what comes next for Delfi, how Durban can rally around Maria and her sister and whether this beloved piece of the city can rise from what happened on Thursday. But first, there is someone we need to find.
As Fred Rogers said, “In times of tragedy, always look for the helpers, they will always be there.”
Somewhere in Durban is a helper who saw a burning building, discovered someone was trapped inside, and ran directly into the flames. He did not wait around for recognition. He got Maria’s sister out alive and left before anyone could even get his name.
Share this story. Ask around. Let’s find the hero who ran into Delfi Greek Taverna and saved a life!
