One of the city’s biggest celebrations of animals and animal welfare is happening on Sunday – don’t miss the parade!
Cape Town, South Africa (01 October 2026) – It’s going to be a party with paw-pose! Animal lovers, rescue organisations, pet owners and families from across Cape Town will be gathering on Sunday, 4 October, to celebrate World Animal Day.
It’s one of the city’s biggest celebrations of animals and animal welfare!
The annual event is hosted by Paws-a-While and comes packaged as a fun-filled day that celebrates the animals that bring love, joy and companionship into our lives. It’s also an opportunity to recognise all of the incredible organisations and people in Cape Town who put animals first.
The event will feature a Rescue Organisation Parade – a clever way to shine a big light on participating animal welfare organisations and the animals they help. Visitors will also be able to meet these rescue organisations and support the many causes worth backing.
The parade is one of the biggest highlights, where organisations will proudly march under their banners. Expect a show, because a prize is up for grabs for the most creative parade entry!
The day is dedicated to the network of organisations, volunteers, foster families, veterinarians, sponsors and members of the public who make animal welfare work possible in the Mother City.
“World Animal Day is about celebrating animals, but it is also about celebrating the people who stand up for them,” says Carolyn Dudgeon, Founder and Executive Director of Paws-a-While. “There are so many incredible organisations doing difficult work every single day, often with limited resources. We wanted to create a day where the public can come together, meet these organisations, learn about the work they do and simply celebrate the animals who bring so much joy to our lives.”
The event will also highlight the importance of responsible pet ownership, adoption, sterilisation and supporting animal welfare organisations.
If you’re in Cape Town on Sunday, bring along your family, meet local rescue organisations, support animal welfare and enjoy a day celebrating the animals that bring so much joy into our lives!
