For most of us, blowing out birthday candles or saying our favourite words is second nature. But for children like Kennedine and Imaraan, a single surgery unlocks a whole world of unforgettable firsts.

Western Cape, South Africa (01 November 2026) – While the Smile Foundation has been transforming lives for years, for example, a child taking their first step toward care, whether for cleft lip or critical craniofacial surgery, the impact is as new as the charity’s very first procedure, bringing with it countless new beginnings.

Following her life-changing surgery during the Smile Foundation’s Smile Week at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, Kennedine celebrated a milestone many of us take for granted: blowing out her birthday candles for the very first time.

But the special moments didn’t stop there. Just one day after surgery, Kennedine couldn’t stop repeating the word “Black,” overjoyed that she could finally pronounce it! She was so excited to show her friends her newfound ability that she wanted to return to school the very next day!

For Imaraan, who developed growths on his hands from cancer treatment after facing cancer as a young child, support from the Smile Foundation’s sponsors and the team at Tygerberg Hospital meant he received the care he needed. He also became one of the children featured on a Smile Week poster at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and was over the moon to spot himself.

It’s moments like these that remind us that life-changing surgery is about so much more than a procedure.

Thanks to incredible supporters and everyone who showed up with mismatched socks for the annual Socks for Smiles campaign on 16 October, even more children like Kennedine and Imaraan can continue experiencing these extraordinary firsts, gaining confidence, and basking in the joy of the little milestones that mean everything.

While the Smile team is still tallying up the numbers to confirm how much was raised through Socks for Smiles 2026, they are grateful for every person who showed up for the cause.

“We’re still counting every rand raised through Socks for Smiles, and we can’t wait to share how your generosity will translate into life-changing surgeries for children. Stay tuned; we’ll soon reveal just how many smiles we’ve helped make possible! Thank you for celebrating our differences and making every sticker, badge, and sock count!”
