McDonald’s has confirmed that they will be 100% recyclable by 2025 and make use of suppliers that are renewable, recycled or certified. They are already halfway there.
The worlds biggest chain-food restaurant has made a commitment to being 100% recyclable by 2025. This commitment has come with the promise of many projects being implemented before the end of 2018.
McDonald’s has confirmed that they will stop using all foam packaging by the end of this year and provide recycling bins for all packaging by 2025. These changes will be implemented in every restaurant across the globe.
“We have a responsibility to use our scale for good to make changes that will have a meaningful impact across the globe,” – Francesca DeBiase, McDonald’s chief supply chain and sustainability officer.
The company has confirmed that 50% of their packaging is already made using recycled materials and that 64% of fibre-based packaging comes from certified or recycled sources. These are being supplied on a global scale.
“McDonald’s will work with industry experts, local governments and environmental groups to improve packaging designs, create new recycling programs, set progress benchmarks and educate its employees and customers.”
The company hopes that this commitment will inspire other mass fast-food chains to join in and create a sustainable future.
“These goals have the potential to be transformational because no other restaurant has the scope and global supply chain of McDonald‘s,” – Tom Murray, vice president of corporate partnerships at the Environmental Defence Fund,
“When McDonald’s began their waste reduction efforts nearly 30 years ago, the business and environmental benefits were immediate: the company saved an estimated $6 million a year.”
