inDrive’s latest campaign in Soweto paired bold murals and free WiFi with a powerful message: freedom of movement builds empowered communities.

Soweto, South Africa (09 May 2025) – Spaza shop makeovers, connecting the community, uplifting local artists and providing a service that gives people the freedom to get around town are just some of the highlights from the latest inDrive campaign, which saw the team getting involved on Freedom Day.

inDrive, which is a global ride-hailing platform, celebrated its sixth year in South Africa by collaborating with Soweto creatives and local businesses to champion the freedom of movement in a tangible, lasting way.

They painted the town green. Literally! And for a great cause, too. While they are all about connecting people to where they need to go, it was community connection that took the spotlight recently.

Working with Soweto-born twin brothers, Fhatuwani and Justice Mukheli of I See A Different You, they were commissioned to create a striking wall mural to stand as a beacon of empowerment and community pride. Not only did the mural brighten the community, but it was also included in the branding, where QR codes for free WiFi access were provided for their customers, ensuring these community hubs remain connected and accessible.

The campaign also gave makeovers a total of 14 spaza shops across Soweto, driving home the commitment of inDrive’s campaign to give the community freedom of choice.

“Soweto is moving, and inDrive is moving with it,” says Ashif Black, Country Representative in South Africa at inDrive. “Our focus is on freedom of choice – who you ride with, how much you pay, and how you move.”

“These murals and shop revamps are more than aesthetic upgrades – they’re direct bridges to opportunity,” adds Black. “Accessibility, affordability, and authentic local creativity are at the heart of this initiative. By providing free WiFi at these spaza shops, we’re supporting the everyday spaces where Sowetans gather, shop, and connect.”

inDrive has centred its brand identity on the belief that challenging injustice and empowering people through access and personal choice is essential to driving real change. The mission is to level the playing field, giving everyone access to fair ride-hailing while adding elements of community upliftment to the mix.

Having been in South Africa for six years now, the inDrive team is marking a growth milestone and deepening its connection to Soweto. This campaign celebrates the cumulative progress of thousands of safe, affordable rides negotiated by riders and drivers alike and a community embracing choice.

How inDrive Works

inDrive has a peer-to-peer model that provides freedom of choice for both the passenger and driver through negotiable fares, direct-route options, and transparent driver profiles. It’s an empowering ride-hailing platform that gives drivers and riders the best options to get from A to Z.

It gives everyone an insight and makes the everyday commutes a more personalised experience. This is done by giving both the rider and the driver the options to:

  • Negotiate your fare: Riders suggest what they’ll pay, drivers accept – no hidden fees and unexpected hikes.
  • Choose your route: Direct trips mean less waiting, fewer transfers, and more time for what matters.
  • Select your driver: Profiles, ratings, and preferences put you in control.

“It’s simple: freedom of movement is empowerment; we strongly believe in this philosophy, and we also offer the lowest commission fees in the country for drivers, allowing a fair earning,” says Black. “This translates to great value for our users as they enjoy the freedom to choose how they move. Every ride on inDrive is a vote for choice, fairness, and opportunity.”

inDrive chose to empower Soweto on Freedom Day because it commemorates the remarkable journey since April 27, 1994. It’s a celebration that looks forward; it’s not about fixing the past; it’s about amplifying the power of mobility today and into the future!
