The City says the launch of this pilot project is aimed at creating a safer Joburg for all, especially since reckless driving and driving under the influence has been at the top of the monthly transgressions as per the JMPD statistics.

Johannesburg, South Africa – In order to make reporting reckless and negligent driving behaviour as well as by-law infringements across the City of Joburg easier, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) on Wednesday, 27 March 2019, launched the Buya Mthetho Hotline pilot project.

This hotline will allow residents to report reckless and inconsiderate road behaviour along with other by-law infringements, by uploading the footage onto the WhatsApp-based hotline where after the JMPD will follow up and take the necessary actions.

The City says the launch of this pilot project is aimed at creating a safer Joburg for all, especially since reckless driving and driving under the influence has been at the top of the monthly transgressions as per the JMPD statistics.

Residents of Joburg can use this hotline to report reckless, dangerous and inconsiderate driving by:

  1. Take a clear photo or a video of the reckless driver with the registration number of the vehicle;
  2. Upload to the hotline with a short description including date, time and location of the incident; and
  3. Provide your real name and contact details which will be kept anonymous.

Please note that the complainant must be willing and able to give evidence or testify in court should the legal process requires. Photos or video footages that are not taken by the complainant but by a third party may not be admissible as evidence for prosecution.

The photo or video must have been taken by the complainant themselves, and not forwarded photos or clips taken by a third party or downloaded from other sources. The complainant must also be able and willing to testify against the offender if required in terms of the legal process.

Once the complaint is received, JMPD will analyse the evidence and deal with it accordingly, including submission of the claim to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for prosecution.

  • The Reckless Driving Hotline WhatsApp number is 081 410 6338.
  • Voice complaints are still to be reported to JMPD on (011) 375 5911.

IMPORTANT: ONLY TAKE PICTURES AND VIDEO FOOTAGES WHEN IS IT SAFE TO DO SO AND DO NOT CONTRAVENE ROAD SAFETY RULES AND LEGISLATION.
