Mandela Day is once again commemorated in a COVID lockdown, and the basic needs of many people are greater than before.

Cape Town, South Africa (06 July 2021) – Cape Town-based charity Ladles of Love sets out to break the Guinness World Record for the longest line of food cans at the upcoming Mandela Day, 18 July 2021.

The current Canadian-held record is 3.28 km for 44 966 cans. The Ladles of Love target is 90 000 cans measuring 6.7 km long. The public is encouraged to use their 67 minutes to be Love Activists and help raise the food cans needed to not only break the Guinness World Record but break hunger around the peninsula.

Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the ability to make an impact. Ladles of Love embraces Mandela Day fully and each year creates a platform to honour Madiba’s life and legacy by rallying active citizens to do good.

Ladles of Love Founder Danny Diliberto explains, “Mandela Day is once again commemorated in a COVID lockdown, and the basic needs of many people are greater than before. As the economic impact of this pandemic rips through these already poor communities, the requests for help from people desperate literally grow every day. It is a fact, the queues at our community kitchens are getting longer.” he continues, “Ladles of Love has served almost 18 million meals since the beginning of lockdown in 2020. We have families, seniors, and children all relying on us for their winter meals. So we need to use Mandela Day this year to recruit new and old volunteers to join us in this fight.”

Last year, Ladles of Love broke the world record for the most sandwiches made in one hour. Volunteers from across the peninsula showed incredible generosity of spirit, and a mind-boggling 304 000 homemade sandwiches were made in one hour, which was then distributed to communities in need.

Diliberto says, “It was a great way to fill an immediate need for food and raise funds for our ongoing food programmes. So, this year we need help to break another record! And all we need are 90 000 cans to do it!”
