The first full cold spell of (almost) winter is coming this weekend, and one of the best ways to stay warm is warming the hearts of others.
South Africa (06 June 2025) – As South Africa braces for a bitter cold spell with snow predicted across almost every province, now is the time to wrap each other in care, kindness, and community. While many of us will be layering up or huddling indoors, thousands of people and animals across the country face the harsh elements with little or nothing to shield them, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
From soup kitchens to animal shelters, night shelters to community-led outreach efforts, every single person who steps up can make a difference. Whether it’s dropping off blankets, donating old coats, sponsoring a meal, or giving of your time, winter is always warmer when we come together.
What to Donate:
- For people: Warm clothing (jackets, scarves, socks, beanies, gloves), blankets, sleeping bags, non-perishable food, toiletries (especially sanitary pads), and thermos flasks.
- For animals: Blankets, dry food, old pet jerseys, kennels, and straw for bedding.
- For shelters and outreach teams: Gas bottles (just call and check which kind – or even offer to refill ones already owned), portable heaters (or electricity money to run them), soup ingredients, hygiene packs, and monetary donations to support service delivery.
How You Can Help:
- Drop off donations at your nearest shelter, community centre, or local SPCA. You can find our list of charities to support here.
- Volunteer your time at a soup kitchen or overnight shelter.
- Host a drive in your neighbourhood, office, or school; every extra jacket or can of soup counts.
- Support organisations on the ground with monetary contributions. Many have “wish lists” online.
- Share the message. Let others know where they can help, too.
According to the South African Weather Service, an intense cold front will bring sub-zero temperatures, gale-force winds, and snowfall across much of the country from 7 to 12 June 2025. While these conditions are dramatic, they are far more dangerous for people without adequate shelter or warmth.
Let’s remind each other what Ubuntu truly means: I am because we are. There’s no better time to open your heart, your cupboard, and your hands.
