DC’s Journey from Uncertain Fate to Finding a Safe Place to Land

When old age left her vulnerable and unwanted, a pony named DC was rescued from a heartbreaking fate by the Highveld Horse Care Unit.

Meyerton, South Africa (17 September 2026) – What happens to a horse or a pony when they are no longer “useful” to their owners? When they become too old or tired to pull heavy loads or be ridden? The hope is that most will retire to a slower-paced life of rest and ease.

Sadly, however, this isn’t always the case, as seen in the story of DC.

Somewhere in her past, DC was likely someone’s cherished pony – loved, ridden, and useful. However, now in her late 20s, the Highveld Horse Care Unit (HHCU) shares that she was recently bought at an auction by an owner who hoped she was in foal and could be used for breeding. When it became clear that her advanced age made this impossible, her fate took a dark turn.

“DC was going to be sold to a traditional healer for her skin,” HHCU explains.

However, before that could happen, fate stepped in. HHCU found her lying exhausted against a wall beside a busy road after she had managed to break out. She was old, tired, hungry, and weary, but the organisation secured her to safety just in time.

“This is not a criticism of traditional healers, nor is it intended to be prejudiced toward any culture or belief,” HHCU clarified.

“The issue is, what happens to our old horses and ponies when they are no longer useful to us?”

In sharing DC’s nearly devastating ending, HHCU hopes to spread the message and awareness that horses should not end their lives at an auction, pulling a cart, passed from owner to owner, or facing an uncertain fate simply because someone can make a little money from them.

Whether they were the pony that carried your child or the schoolmaster that patiently taught countless riders, if a horse gave its humans their best years, surely they owe the horse dignity in their last ones.

“DC mattered then. She matters now. And she is safe.”
