Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis was named Coach of the Year at the 2022 Provincial Sport Awards this past weekend.
Cape Town, South Africa (19 September 2022) – Banyana Banyana became the new queens of the continent after coach Desiree Ellis’ brave charges beat hosts Morocco to win a maiden Women’s Africa Cup of Nation (WAFCON) title at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Saturday 23 July 2022.
Since the win, many women from the team have earned accolades. On Saturday, 17 September 2022, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport announced the 2022 Provincial Sport Awards winners at a ceremony at Mutual Park in Pinelands.
These awards are the culmination of a process of district awards which took place over the last two months. Winners of the district awards proceeded as nominees at Saturday’s awards.
Banyana Banyana Coach Desiree Ellis took home the Coach of the Year award after guiding Banyana Banyana to the 2-1 victory in Morroco earlier this year.
