In a world that often moves too fast to notice the small things, a tiny Dikkop with a shattered leg was found by a caring member of the public who sought its help and a chance at survival.
Cape Town, South Africa (19 December 2025) – Found unable to stand, his little leg severely fractured, and his future uncertain, a small Dikkop (or Thick-knee) found a fighting chance at the Animal Welfare Society (AWS).
He was brought in by a caring member of the public who noticed his pain.
“When he arrived, he was frightened, exhausted, and in obvious pain. Moments like these break our hearts, because every tiny life that comes through our doors carries a story we wish they never had to tell,” AWS said.
The team wasted no time, working gently and quickly to stabilise him. X-rays confirmed a badly broken leg that would need orthopaedic surgery.
“He was taken into theatre, where our orthopaedic surgeon carefully pinned the fracture, giving this brave little bird the best chance at healing.”

The Dikkop is currently recovering at AWS’s high care ward, where he is being monitored.
“His leg is healing, slowly but surely, and although he cannot understand our words, we hope he can feel the love, gentleness, and hope surrounding him.”
The team has been amazed by how much fight such a delicate creature can have, even when the odds were stacked against them.
“Once his bones are strong again and he is ready to stand proudly on his own, he will be returned to the place he came from…back to the wild, where he belongs, free and safe.”
Without help, this feathered little one would not have survived. This rescue and rehabilitation just goes to show that every act of kindness from the public makes a world of difference, especially for small and fragile wildlife.
“It’s stories like these that remind us why we do what we do. Thank you to everyone who continues to care for the big lives, the small ones, and the ones who sometimes go unseen,” AWS thanked.
