Rugby players shared what makes playing in South Africa such a daunting experience, from bruising collisions to unforgettable home support.
South Africa (07 July 2026) – If you thought facing the Springboks was tough, just wait until you hear what the opposition has to say.
Ahead of England’s clash with South Africa, a group of English rugby players were asked a simple question: What’s the worst thing about playing in South Africa?
Some pointed to the sheer size of the Bok pack, joking that even South Africa’s “smallest” player seems to stand over six feet tall and weigh well over 100 kilograms.
Others admitted that the high altitude can leave visiting teams gasping for air before they’ve even settled into the game.
Several described playing in South Africa as one of rugby’s toughest away experiences, saying the local supporters get right behind the Springboks and create an intimidating environment from the moment the opposition walks onto the field.
One summed it up by saying the crowd is “really hostile”, before admitting it’s also a great place to play.
Whether it’s the physicality, the altitude or tens of thousands of passionate supporters dressed in green and gold, a trip to South Africa is never an easy assignment.
