The devastation at Pearly Beach has been overwhelming, but it has been met with an even greater surge of compassion. Members of the Animal Welfare Society have been braving smoke and flames to ensure that every injured pet and displaced wild animal finds immediate care and safety.

Cape Town, South Africa (08 January 2026) – It has been an intense start to the year for our local heroes, who face flames with inspiring courage, following an outbreak of fires breaking out in several parts of Mossel Bay.

According to reports, fast-moving wildfires have destroyed multiple homes, vehicles and large areas of vegetation this week.

Firefighters and emergency services have been battling flare-ups and managing evacuations in hotspot areas. The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS) has been looking out for wildlife caught among the flames, dispatching teams to assist with the rapidly spreading fire in Pearly Beach.

The effects have been devastating, with members encountering injured animals, destroyed habitats, and the remains of those who couldn’t escape in time.

“Our team is currently on the ground in Pearly Beach, assisting with the devastating fire that is spreading at a rapid rate. We are providing urgent support for animal-related emergencies, including injured pets and affected wildlife in need of immediate care.

“As our team continues to search through the fire-ravaged areas, we are coming across wildlife affected by the fires, and the devastation is heartbreaking. It is overwhelming, and it is real,” AWS reports.

The animal welfare organisation has appealed for public support to fuel its efforts on the ground, and the community has responded, rallying together to donate towards AWS’s Fire Relief Fund, which goes directly towards fuel, medical supplies, rescue equipment and ongoing relief efforts during such emergencies.

In these trying times, we honour the bravery of every rescuer and the resilience of the community, offering our deepest support to every life affected by the flames.
