The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa’s clinic is the only one that’s open every day (including Sundays and Public Holidays) to all sick and injured pets in the Cape Flats. Here’s how this incredible staff’s dedication has made a difference since they extended their hours:

Philippi, South Africa (24 February 2025) — The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa have outdone itself in the world of animal heroes by extending its hours to serve more pets on the Cape Flats every day, including Sundays and Public Holidays.

As the AWS team indicates, this makes them the only animal welfare organisation on the Cape Flats that’s open to the public’s sick and injured pets on ‘off days’.

“For the past year, our Hospital has been left to carry the full responsibility for indigent pet owners’ sick and injured animals following the closure of all other facilities on these traditionally busy days,” the team explained.

“Over the past 3 months 1,403 pets have benefitted from our Executive Committee’s enlightened decision and staff’s willingness to stay open on Sundays and Public Holidays.”

For the team, the arrangement is based on an ethos that never refuses admission to any animal in need.

However, as admirable as the effort is, it also comes with strain, especially in the financial sphere.

“We are hopeful that once Cape Town’s pet loving population becomes aware of our decision to remain open year-round despite the odds, they will get behind us to ensure that no pet owner is left without access to affordable, professional veterinary care.”
