Baby Rhino Serenaded

The Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary posted a video on YouTube of an adorable baby Rhino being serenaded to sleep, the sweet thing lay down and drifted off!

The sweet little baby Rhino was sadly abandoned by her mother. The Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary took her in and have been caring for her in the best way!

They have said there are a number of reasons why a mother Rhino would abandon her baby. It could be poor nutrition on the mothers part, she was a confused first time mom, there could be something wrong with the calf, she could be in poor health after the birth or she simply wasn’t ready to be a mom.

On behalf of Petronel Nieuwoudt and the team at Care for Wild, thank you to everyone for all of your well wishes regarding the new calf at our rhino orphanage in South Africa. She is doing well and continues to improve as each day goes by!

This little rhino calf was born in the afternoon on Monday the 19th of June, and the people observing her quickly noted that the mother was not allowing the calf to drink any milk. Advice from veterinarians said that they should monitor the mother and calf throughout the night to see if she lets the calf drink.

However, by morning it was clear that she had rejected the newborn so it was decided that human intervention was urgently needed if the calf was to have a chance of survival.

Petronel Nieuwoudt, Founder & Owner of Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary was called and a emergency rescue plan was put in place. With use of a helicopter they tracked the mother down and put the rescue plan into action.

The mother was quickly sedated and milked so that the young calf had a chance to receive her mother’s colostrum. Colostrum is the first milk that the cow provides to their newborn calf. It is packed full of antibodies that provide the calf with the only disease specific immunity that they will have until their own immune system becomes fully functional.

The calf is now able to thrive in a caring environment and even gets to listen to soft acoustic music as she falls asleep! Watch the adorable video below.
