Washing machines carry a heavy load at animal shelters…
Western Cape, South Africa (29 August 2025) – The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has been gifted two new washing machines to help keep the shelter’s blankets, pillows and animal care items clean. It’s not an immediate need you’d think of, but it makes all the difference.
For months, staff at the shelter had been holding their breath every time they hit ‘start’ on their old machines. One sounded like it crawled out of a horror movie, and the other only spun when it felt like it.
In South Africa, our appliances have their own personalities.
With over 160 blankets, scrubs and theatre drapes to get through every day, the SPCA struggled to manage it all with two machines that often threw tantrums.
That all changed when the SPCA made their case live on Kfm 94.5 radio, with Carl Wastie at the mic and representatives from Hisense and the Dis-Chem Foundation listening in.
They had just 30 seconds to explain why a working washing machine would be a blessing.
“A blanket is only as good as it is clean,” they told the panel. “Sick animals need clean blankets so they can heal,” and “Healthy animals need clean blankets so they stay that way.”
They were heard, and moments later, they weren’t just promised one new washing machine but two.
Now the Cape of Good Hope SPCA has the backup it so desperately needed. The machines will power through endless loads of washing, keeping bedding fresh and safe for every animal that walks through their doors.
Nobody deserves a stinky blanket. It’s a simple but important small win.
