Kokose in Carletonville was paid a special visit yesterday when green-thumbed volunteers stopped by to refresh the area with newly planted wild olive and fruit trees!

Carletonville, South Africa (08 July 2024) — Green-thumbed volunteers made their way to Carletonville yesterday with a plan of action to refresh the Kokose area with some newly-planted wild olive and fruit trees!

In the winter sunshine, ASEZ volunteers (a global university volunteer group) turned the dusty patches of land into spots of hopeful fruition, an effort led by their mission to give more communities the benefit of having trees as neighbours while helping balance carbon emissions.

The student volunteers got their hands dirty to plant 35 wild olive and fruit trees in Ramaphosa and Hector Peterson Street; a handful more than their planting work at Hlangabeza Primary School earlier this year.

Ayanda Tholoana, the Admin Clerk of the Department of Parks and Cemeteries thanked them for their work in creating a eco-social-positive work—a task they take on around the world.

Beyond tree planting, the student volunteers also participate in forest clean-ups, forest fire prevention action and other biodiversity-centric tasks related to creating a ‘global forest ecosystem’. But, South Africa has remained close to their class to responsibility, with ASEZ volunteers holding their Forest of Hope declaration campaign right here in Pretoria at Magnolia Deli.

The volunteer students left behind not only planted trees that we’re sure will grow big and strong, but also donated 35 citrus trees to households in the Kokose community.
