Hlangabeza Primary School in Carletonville got a new class of olive and fruit trees, thanks to volunteers who turned a dreary Sunday morning into a special planting session:

Carletonville, South Africa (8 April 2024) — On Sunday, more than fifty volunteers got down to business and planted 30 wild olive and fruit trees at Hlangabeza Primary School in Carletonville!

Part of an effort to give biodiversity a boost in the area, youthful volunteers (of whom most did not have prior tree-planting experience or knowledge) gathered on the cold and rainy morning to carry out the joy-planting and eco-positive task at hand.

Teaming up with the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD), the university student volunteers part of ASEZ played their part in doing some good for the learners and staff at Hlangabeza Primary and the surrounding environment.

Trees are excellent absorbers of carbon dioxide, help prevent landslides and soil erosion and promote people’s health, stability and well-being—and almost anywhere is left better off when their are more (non-invasive) trees in the neighbourhood. However, in Carletonville, Sunday’s planting session didn’t just mark a good day for the school, but the beginning of a larger series of tree-planting efforts set to pop up all around the Gauteng town!

ASEZ is a group of university student volunteers from the World Mission Society Church of God, who act to solve practical problems around the world. The group organizes events and activities to address pressing needs in various communities, giving a chance for the ASEZ volunteers to flex their muscles as young leaders.

Sydney Ntuli, Senior Scientist from GDARD, who also actively joined the volunteers and demonstrated tree-planting techniques, commended the volunteers: “You have done a great job today and I hope to work with you on many of these initiatives.”

Gabriel Lecwamotse, Ward 10 committee member who was also representing the ward councillor, also expressed his gratitude to the volunteers:

“On behalf of the councillor and the community, I would like to say thank you so much for your contribution and dedication today. It means a lot to the community. I also hope there will be many more of these here in Carletonville”.
