This Christmas, the Cart Horse Protection Association plans to shoe as many horses as possible for free!
Cape Town, South Africa (28 November 2025) – The non-profit organisation, which has operated for three decades now, works in equine welfare across 21 different areas of the Western Cape.
Their mission is to promote the welfare of working horses and donkeys through service provision, legislation, education and training.
The NPO protects working cart horses and donkeys on the Cape Flats from abuse, and it supports cart horse owners who use cart horses as a means to generate an income for themselves and their families.
On 15 December, the team from the CHPA will kit out as many cart horses as possible with new shoes!
Hoof-care is critical for working horses. If a horse’s feet are not properly taken care of, it will eventually affect other parts of their body.
“Working cart horses travel up to 80kms per day, every day, day, after day, after day. They run straight through a set of shoes in the space of two weeks.” shares the CHPA.
The drive in December is meant to encourage cart horse owners to make use of the organisation’s professional farrier services, instead of using someone without the necessary knowledge and skill.
They’re calling on the community to help kick off the campaign with R250 donations that will go directly towards a full set of shoes for deserving cart horses.
Supporters can also get involved by directly purchasing the tools and equipment that cart horses will be sent home with, including a hoof pick, hoof polish and a grooming brush.
If you’d like to donate, follow this link. If you’d link to purchase items directly, find out more here.
“You will be making a working cart horse very happy and comfortable on our roads this Christmas.” shares the organisation.
