6000 people, 9 countries and over 500 events are happening around Africa to clean up our continent!
Today the “Act For Change Africa” initiative was launched to clean up the continent! The initiative is driven by Shoprite Group and Brownie-Points, with the support of many organisations including the United Nations Environment Programme, WESSA, PETCO and POLYCO.
In doing so the Group hopes to launch a movement of active citizens who act for change by cleaning and keeping clean public areas. Plastic waste is putting the environment under considerable pressure with the equivalent of a garbage truck of plastic being dumped into our oceans every minute.
Furthermore South Africa risks running out of landfill space over the next couple of years. Recycling therefore is central to this initiative and cleanup organisers are encouraged to partner with local recyclers or wastepickers to ensure that most of what is collected gets recycled.
With this focus, “Act of Change” aims to highlight the business opportunities available through the recycling of paper, glass, plastic and other material.
“There is a lot of awareness around litter and specifically plastic pollution with thousands of people doing their bit to make a difference. This is an opportunity for Africa to unite in one initiative to create huge awareness, while making a real difference and educating each other about better ways to manage waste.
“Litter affects all of us. Join the movement today and help us make a meaningful difference.” – Blake Dyason
Anybody can join via the website www.actforchange.africa.
The digital platform enables users to create their own cleanups or join an existing one in their area. It also contains information about the nearest recycler or waste management company.
On the platform cleanup organisers are given guidelines on what their duties are as hosts, how to market their event and what to do on the day and after the cleanup. Participants are to share their experience on social media.
The late, great Nelson Mandela dreamt “of our vast deserts, of our forests, and of all our great wildernesses. We must never forget that it is our duty to protect this environment.”
