In just two months the Clanwilliam Dam has gone from practically dried up to overflowing thanks recent rainfall. Now they have opened their gates to release the excess.
Clanwilliam Dam has been blessed with weeks of substantial rainfall. The constant precipitation has meant that its levels have skyrocketed from a disastrous 6% all the way up to 100% in a matter of weeks.
The main purpose of the dam is to provide irrigation water to the agricultural region downstream. It has a capacity of 121,800,000 cubic metres. This means that ever drop released will be a benefit for the farmlands below.
Just yesterday the department’s regional head, Rashid Khan confirmed that if winter rains continue to pour in, there is hope that restictions can be adjusted but an overall average needs to be maintained before this can be addressed.
“The prevailing water restrictions will remain in force until our dam levels reach more than 85% as a collective average of the dams in the Western Cape,”
The South African was sent footage of a helicopter flying over the dam showing how it was basically at 100%. Other footage of the gates being opened has also been shared by Reenval SA.
