South Africans can celebrate another successful Clean-Up and Recycle Week; thousands of kilogrammes of waste were removed from our natural spaces.
South Africa (20 September 2022) – Events took place throughout South Africa last week, all to keep our environment clean. It was a huge success, and while Plastics SA takes count of all the litter removed, they wanted to say thank you to South Africans for stepping out to make a difference.
Clean-Up and Recycle Week 2022 was a hit in South Africa. The week was action-packed, with events all dedicated to cleaning our environment.
The week also included River Clean-Up Day, which took place on Wednesday, 14 September, National Recycling Day which took place on Friday, 16 September, and the International Coastal Clean-Up and World Clean-up Days both falling on Saturday, 17 September. These incredible days unite over 180 countries across the world for a cleaner planet.
Volunteers and organisations took to cleaning every space imaginable, including divers who went deep-sea plastic hunting!

Communities united to clean their rivers, and everyone got a helping donation of plastic bags and other items needed to do a hygienic clean-up.
“Plastics SA would like to thank the countless volunteers, organizations and sponsors who participated in clean-ups around South Africa this past week. Thanks to you, this year’s Clean-Up & Recycle SA week (12-17 September 2022) was a huge success with several kilograms of waste removed from our country’s beaches, waterways, rivers, streams, streets and communities around the country.”
If you missed the events this year, add them to your diary for 2023. Efforts are being made on a weekly basis too so be sure to keep an eye on your community groups for events in your area.
