South Africa (21 August 2022) – A community clean-up initiative just reached a milestone of 2 million kilograms of trash collected and diverted from landing up in our dams and oceans.
“Hennops Revival” was founded by Tarryn Johnston in 2019 after a devastating flood destroyed large areas of land surrounding the Hennops River, but it is the Active Citizenship of South Africans that is keeping this incredible clean-up initiative going.
“What started out as a single mother hosting a once-off river clean-up has developed in ways I never imagined, including global recognition! I certainly did not see this coming, but here it is,” Johnston explained to CBN.
And after just three years, the incredible clean-up initiative is celebrating the milestone of collecting 2 million kilograms of trash.

“I lost count of how many people have told me it couldn’t be done, I’d never get it right, and I’m wasting my time. If I had listened to them, I’m not sure what our Hennops River would look like!”

Johnston hopes that more South Africans will get involved with river clean-ups, and maybe one day, our rivers will become a source of clean drinking water again.
“We all share this water, and I think people should be made aware of this and be more conscious about how they treat the environment,” said Johnston.
“The country has a serious water crisis, and rivers should be sources of drinking water.”
