De Beers Group donates 34,667 hectares of pristine land to Namaqua National Park, bolstering conservation efforts during South African National Parks Week.

Karoo, South Africa (27 September 2023) – In a heartwarming gesture of conservation and commitment to protecting South Africa’s natural wonders, the De Beers Group has announced a remarkable donation during the South African National Parks Week (from the 16th to the 24th September).

The diamond giant has generously gifted the land it owns in the Namaqua National Park to South African National Parks (SANParks), marking a significant step in safeguarding the country’s unique biodiversity.

The donated land spans an impressive 34,667 hectares of the Succulent Karoo, nestled between the Groen and Spoeg Rivers. This pristine stretch of wilderness has been under SANParks’ stewardship since 2008, functioning as an extension of the Namaqua National Park. Its incorporation into the park has played a pivotal role in preserving the remarkable biodiversity found within the Succulent Karoo biome, a true natural gem and the world’s only arid biodiversity hotspot. Now, with De Beers’ generous contribution, this untouched land is firmly established within South Africa’s national protected area network, ensuring its preservation for the benefit of all South Africans.

This noble act by De Beers Group harmoniously aligns with the spirit of the 18th annual South African National Parks Week, an event aimed at raising awareness about conservation issues. De Beers has embraced the ideals of this event through its ‘Building Forever’ sustainability pillar, focusing on ‘Protecting the Natural World.’ The company recognizes that the restoration and protection of biodiversity, the intricate tapestry of life and its connection to the natural world, hold the potential to unlock a wide array of sustainable benefits for society.

Moses Madondo, the Managing Director of De Beers Managed Operations, expressed his enthusiasm about this milestone, stating, “The donation of this land is another significant milestone in our longstanding relationship with SANParks. Together, we have delivered on ambitious projects over several years to support the preservation of our natural heritage sites. We see the conservation of our natural environment as a key priority and recognize that it is vital to the future prosperity of the countries where we operate. De Beers is committed to protecting nature and its awe-inspiring creations through our Building Forever goals on biodiversity and sustainable development.”

Since 2008, SANParks has diligently invested in the development of this land and its neighbouring communities. Notable achievements include the employment of 11 individuals, the construction of 12 eco-friendly campsites, six staff houses, an office building, walkways, hiking trails, bird hides, ablution facilities, and the enhancement of the perimeter fence.

Property Mokoena, Managing Executive for SANParks, expressed his delight at De Beers’ donation, saying, “SANParks is pleased with the donation made by De Beers, and we hope to see many people visit the Namaqua National Park in the coming years to explore its beauty.”

This remarkable act of philanthropy by De Beers Group demonstrates not only their commitment to sustainability but also their deep respect for South Africa’s rich natural heritage. As we celebrate South African National Parks Week, this donation stands as a shining example of corporate responsibility, reminding us all of the beauty and importance of preserving our natural world for generations to come.
