Saved Turtles

A group of divers were out for the day when they saw something floating in the water, a turtle had been tangled up in fishing line. They saved it and hours later found another two turtles trapped in rubbish.

Now more than ever, it is important to take a stand against ocean pollution. On a daily basis, we are shown images and videos of what plastic pollution is doing to the wildlife at sea.

The Dodo recently shared a video of a group of divers saving three turtles who were trapped in plastic pollution and fishing line. The video is a stark look at the damage being done but also has a feel-good ending as all three turtles were saved from slow deaths.

Joseph A. Yerkovich, Roberto Illanes, Soul Spearfishing, Marc Nettekoven, Jan Nettekoven, Sam Sladon and Armel Melendez were all present when the video footage was filmed.

They spotted the first turtle pulling along three floating buoys, all attached to a fishing line that had entangled the turtle. The poor turtle had been unable to dive down. The men worked tirelessly to free him and once he was freed, he swam off.

A few hours later, they saw another floating object and once close enough, saw two more turtles entangled in trash and stuck to each other.

The men saved three lives, thankfully they were there to save them. We need to work harder to prevent plastic and trash ending up in our oceans.
