Bobby is more comfortable now with his new custom-made protective gear!
Roodepoort, South Africa (16 October 2025) – Bobby was one of 36 donkeys rescued by Rest ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary in Thabazimbi last December. He was moved to their Bela Bela site, where he’s been living under gentle watch. They’re not short on love there, a home for previously abused donkeys who now find it by the bucket.
Over the months, Bobby and his friends have settled well into their new chapter, where they’re safe, fed, and finally free of neglect. But not long ago, Bobby’s carers noticed that he wasn’t doing as well as he should have been.
His eyes watered constantly. The tears burned the skin on his face, leaving it sore and itchy. He scratched until he broke the skin, and no medication helped. After more vet visits and a trip to Onderstepoort, a biopsy revealed a chronic parasitic disease called besnoitiosis. Usually, it’s seen in cattle but known to affect donkeys too.

Besnoitiosis has no cure. It can cause bumps on the skin, eye problems, and general irritation that doesn’t respond to the usual medicines. It also means that Bobby’s carers can only manage his symptoms. The best they can do for him is build up his immune system, reduce stress, and keep him comfortable.

One of the biggest risks for him is flies. They love to be around donkeys, and having open sores like Bobby does can make an already annoying bother a harmful one.
After hearing the story and about Rest Ur Ass’ mission to make him comfortable, Carol from Charlie’s Miniature Horses and Tack did a good thing. Within a day of receiving his measurements, a special delivery addressed to Bobby arrived at the facility.
It was a custom-made flysheet and neckpiece tailored to Bobby’s small frame. A flysheet is a protective cover designed especially for horses and donkeys. It’s made from a breathable mesh that keeps flies and insects away and shields from the sun. It adds to the life-saving protection Bobby needs to feel a bit better.

He can move and graze around in his new gear without fuss.
If you’d like to support Rest Ur Ass in their work, you can ‘adopt’ a donkey, with your contributions helping to cover the costs for vital care. Or, you can visit their monthly market where you’ll find two of the finest commodities – koeksisters and donkey cuddles.
