Drago waited six years for love and landed with his bum in the snow! An old boy now, his story shines a light on how adoption is every lonely doggie’s dream.

South Africa (24 February 2026) – The most heartbreaking cases at animal welfare shelters happen when people simply walk by. That was Drago’s reality for six years – watching his four-pawed friends find forever homes month after month, never being the chosen one.

“Drago (like so many medium size, X breed dogs worldwide) had been at our site for years with zero adoption interest. Hope was fading that he would ever find a breakthrough and experience the simple joy of home and family.” shares Paws R Us.

Then, one day, Helen walked in. Instantly she knew that Drago was her boy. It happened in the blink of an eye.

“Then WHAMMMM… out of the blue, Helen swooped in and wanted to meet our boy. We all held our breath, our thumbs and toes (and darn near everything else) when she came to visit him – and, it was love at first sight!”

After what felt like a lifetime of waiting, Drago found his home. The story could end there, a happily-ever-after, but it gets even better! Helen, Drago, and his cat siblings moved to Baarn in Holland four years ago.

From a lonely life in a South African shelter, Drago got to take his steps in the snow alongside his mom, who went through great lengths to bring her four-legged family halfway across the world with her.

“Helen has had to pull out all the stops to plan this emigration, and find the funds to take them over with her, but family is family and she has triumphed…we are over the moon to confirm that Drago is now a Dutch boytjie!” shared Paws R Us.

That’s love, and a lot of stress, for all the right reasons.

Helen regularly shares updates about Drago and their many adventures – exploring cities, parks, and even the snow together. Drago has become a celebrity on Paws R Us’ social media channels.

Drago is more than 10 years old now. A doggie who once only knew loneliness now knows love and acceptance.

“Today, DRAGO is an old boy – he moves slowly, his face is full of the ‘frosty’ sprinkles of age and time. But he has LIVED and he has LOVED, and that makes our hearts SOAR.” shares Paws R Us.

This is the magic that adoption makes possible.

“Adoption blesses lives – not just that of the shelter dog, but the human life too. They bring joy, laughter, shared memories, a sense of family, a place of love and belonging, and the simple pleasure of presence and companionship. Please consider blessing a life. There are many dogs just like DRAGO, yearning every day for the chance to find a home.” shares Paws R Us.
