A new bus station is in the works and local artists are going to make it feel like home! An open call for proposals will run until late March.

Cape Town, South Africa (24 February 2026) – Public artwork has brought personality to bus stations across the Mother City for more than a decade. Local artists now have a new blank canvas to aim for.

A brand-new bus station is being built in Claremont as part of a larger rollout which will eventually connect Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain to Wynberg and Claremont.

The Claremont station will be the first, and largest, on this new corridor.

When MyCiTi first launched in May 2010, just before the Soccer World Cup, it launched with three permanent commissioned artworks by local artists on its walls. For more than a decade since, CoCT has upheld the pledge to include commissioned artworks at all its MyCiTi stations.

The Claremont station brings six new opportunities for visual artists to take up space and tell impactful stories. The open canvases include a large vertical wall surface, a curved glass façade, a foyer entrance wall and platform-adjacent walls.

The call is open to all local residents and collectives. Artists are required to submit separate proposals describing their concept and preliminary designs for each space open to commission.

As far as inspiration goes, there’s a deeply rich cultural and natural heritage of Claremont to dip into.

“The vibrant cultural, music, performance, and cinema history of Lower Claremont prior to forced removals. The area as a colonial frontier and as a transit route: from carriage to electric tramway, to rail. Arderne Gardens and its nationally significant heritage trees. The scientific and botanical legacy of Sir John and Lady Herschel during (1834–1838) and early experiments with images created with the camera lucida technique.” shares MyCiTi.

If you’re an artist, this is a real opportunity to contribute to a space thousands of people will move through every day.

“This is an exciting opportunity for artists to showcase their creativity, while celebrating Claremont’s history and enhancing the look of the area. A market-related budget will be allocated based on the size, materials and installation of artworks across different spaces in the precinct. Artists can apply for one space per application. Separate submissions are needed for multiple spaces around the bus station. We are extremely excited to receive the proposals,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

Artworks will be commissioned through a public open competition and overseen by professional curators in collaboration with the City’s Arts and Culture Branch, Urban Planning and Design, and Urban Mobility departments.

Each submission will be carefully evaluated against criteria which includes cultural merit, contextual relevance, public accessibility and more.

The call is open to South African residents and artist collectives until Friday, 27 March 2026. Find out more here.
