Cape Town’s anti-litter mascot, Bingo, has been on quite the adventure since joining the City’s clean efforts last year, with 600 visits done and dusted! Here’s what the cutest bin in the city is all about and how Bingo’s playing a part in a cleaner future for Capetonians:

Cape Town, South Africa (04 November 2024) — While many mascots may lend their energy to sports teams, Cape Town’s Bingo is uniting a different kind of squad—citizens who want to be proud of their city’s cleanliness.

Bingo’s not just the cutest bin in Cape Town. Instead, the anti-litter mascot is a symbol representing one of the most important parts of sustainable living—education.

Since joining the City of Cape Town mid-2023, Bingo has been on quite the educational trip that few bins could challenge. In a big milestone moment, the mascot and the ethos behind it are celebrating 600 visits across the Cape! This means 600 more opportunities for people to access educational activities, responsible waste disposal info and encouragement to keep their spaces litter-free.

Some of Bingo’s biggest moments come from huge occasions for Cape Town, too. Bingo attended the Netball World Cup, the HSBC Sevens, the Festive Lights Switch-on 2023 and the Cape Town Carnival. All of these events are breeding grounds for litter; so having Bingo on the scene played a part in reminding people (especially kids but adults aren’t the exception—Bingo’s not afraid to give an adult the side-eye!) to think twice before tossing their cans, cups or snack wrappers.

Initiatives like Bingo help connect people who might not understand the importance of proper waste management to familiarise themselves with the bigger picture in a way that’s easy to understand and fun to engage with.

Beyond big events, Bingo’s main adventures are at schools and community organisations where educational sessions, skits and games are all on the cards.

“We are thrilled with the impact Bingo has made in the past year, reaching 600 events across Cape Town to promote responsible waste disposal,” shared Mayco Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.

“We encourage more organisations to book Bingo so that together we can inspire a cleaner and greener Cape Town for all.”
