Whilst spear fishing off the coast of South Africa, Johan Potgieter came face-to-face with one of the earth’s most powerful predators.
Known for its momentous size and extreme curiosity, the Great White shark is often found to be the culprit of many ‘shark attacks’, especially in the cold waters of The Western Cape of South Africa.
Great Whites get a lot of bad reputation due to their curiosity because they don’t have any hands to feel or check out things that intrigue them, so they often bring down their incredible force through their razor sharp teeth where they get to enjoy that curiosity for the rest of the day.
South African diver Johan Potgieter survived an encounter with the shark while diving.
Let’s not call it an “attack”, as that upsets a lot of people. But while Potgieter was 19 metres under the water near Skipskop reefs off Cape Town, he was looking the other way when this happened.
There may also have been a scream when he finally saw the shark right next to him… we’re not sure if thats from Johan or the shark.
Potgieter possibly saved his own life by giving it a good poke. When the shark bolted, he made for the surface.
