Even more free access to natural spaces this September!

Western Cape, South Africa (05 September 2025) – September is peak burnout month for South Africans. We become moeg and, for lack of a better word, gatvol. The best thing you can do is go outside and touch grass. Get some sun on your egg and raise your step count.

This September, CapeNature is opening up several of its reserves for visitors to go and do just that. For free. Mahala.

In its 11th year, Access Week gives day visitors in the Western Cape a chance to explore some of its most beautiful spaces without any fees. It will run from the 20th to the 26th of September at select reserves (more on that below).

During Access Week, a number of nature-based programmes will be hosted for community groups to take part in. They’re guided experiences that follow a five-step approach that help strengthen ties to the natural world. In an age of digital funk, it’s something we could all do with more of.

Of course, free access will only be granted during operating hours throughout the day and via CapeNature’s access gates. This will cover conservation fees, including hiking, mountain biking, and other day activities. Other rules and regulations can be found here.

Get your free access at the following CapeNature reserves from 20-26 September

On the West Coast: Groot Winterhoek, Bird Island (excluding 21 & 22 Sept), Matjiesrivier, Rocherpan

In the Winelands: Hottentots Holland, Jonkershoek, Assegaaibosch (picnic area), Vrolijkheid, Limietberg (hiking only)

In the Overberg: Kogelberg, De Mond, De Hoop, Marloth, Grootvadersbosch, Walker Bay, Geelkrans, Stony Point

Along the Garden Route: Robberg, Keurbooms River, Goukamma, Outeniqua

In the Karoo: Swartberg, Gamkaberg, Anysberg

Similarly, SANParks will also be offering day visitors free access to a number of national parks across the country from 22-26 September. Find out more about that here.
