Guy plants a whole a garden for the groundhog who keeps stealing his veggies — and can’t believe it when he brings his whole family over.
Delaware, The United States of America (16 November 2020) – Jeff Permar couldn’t figure out what was destroying his vegetable garden, so he put a camera out to catch the culprit. Little did he know that the groundhogs actually “loved their newfound fame”… and that he would land up building them their own vegetable patch, to help them survive!
It was late spring, 2019 when the keen gardener from Delaware in the US started suffering crop damage to his vegetable patch. Permar planted the seeds and took all the necessary precautions to protect his growing veggies, but every morning he woke to more damage!
“I was really upset because I didn’t know what was eating out of the garden. I thought it was a deer, or it could have been a rabbit.”
Jeff set up a motion-detection camera to catch the vegetable thief in the act. When he replayed the footage, he saw a groundhog “just staring at the camera”.
“He was kind of saying, ‘Yeah, I’m eating your vegetables, what are you going to do about it?’ He was just so cool about it.”
Jeff was initially upset and told The Dodo, “Oh man, I can’t believe this is happening.”
He replaced his fence with a taller one and placed logs along the perimeter, thinking it would prevent the groundhog from entering. He soon found out his attempts were useless and slowly starting forming a friendship with the little groundhog… and his family.
“They’re just trying to survive, just trying to make it out there in the wild. If I can do a job to protect them and keep them safe, prolong their life… I’m all for it. I’m just the gardener here and they are the wildlife that enjoy it.”
