On a Sunday Night, the SPCA in Grahamstown responded to an unusual call. A donkey had found itself wedged neatly between two walls and needed a hero to set it free…
Grahamstown, South Africa (19 November 2025) – According to the SPCA, the confused donkey somehow manoeuvred himself into a narrow gap on Howse Street and then promptly realised he had no idea how to get back out. Not a cooking clue.
“This donkey in Howse Street managed to get himself trapped between 2 walls and he couldn’t climb back up from where he came in,” the team shared.
Inspector Dingana and Inspector Matthews responded to the call. Together, they managed to find a tactful solution, which was to use a ramp of sorts.
But donkeys are famously stubborn, and this one refused to budge. When gentle persuasion didn’t work, the inspectors had to change their approach.
With teamwork and probably a fair bit of grunting, they managed to lift the donkey’s front half over one wall and guide him back onto solid ground.
The SPCA says: “With no other option they lifted the front of the donkey over the wall and managed to get him back onto flat ground.”
The rescue ended safely, with the donkey freed and the inspectors heading home long after most people had curled into bed with their Sunday scaries.
“Thank you to both Inspectors Dingana and Matthews for coming out at night to rescue the donkey. Never a dull moment!” shared the SPCA.
Yet another reason to celebrate our local animal heroes who answer every call. Even when it’s “Hi, there’s a donkey stuck between my neighbour and I.”
